The name "Daihatsu" became popular as
manufacturers of 3-wheel cars in both pre-war and post-war days, and "Midget"
was their best selling model at that time. In 1951, a 3-wheel passenger car
"Bee" mounted with a 804cc engine at the rear was put on the market, but it
disappeared within one year or so. It was further improved, and in 1957, the
new model "Midget" was completed. |
|
 |
|
It was in 1957 when this model first appeared in the
market. It was a 3-wheel truck with a 2-cycle single cylinder engine. This
model sold well because of its special style and simplicity backed by TV
advertisement. Different from the old model which had a bar handle without any door,
this new model had a round steering-wheel and doors. The new model offered much
better riding as well as handling comfort. Owing to the best hit of this 3-wheel
model, similar cars were introduced one by one by many other manufacturers. |

The history of Mazda as a car manufacturer dates back to the
early part of the Showa era. It used to be called "Toyo Cork" and was then
changed to "Toyo Kogyo." First it produced rock drills, and started to
make tricycle trucks in 1931. A mini tricycle truck called "Mazda K360"
was produced in 1958 and was as popular as the Daihatsu Midget. |
|
 |
|
Mazda used to produce 3-wheel trucks, and the first
passenger car made by Mazda was the model "Mazda R360 Coupe." This model
was with 4-cycle 356cc, air cooled 2-cylinder, 16hp engine, and the total weight was only
380kgs. For this reason it could run at high speed. The later model
"Carol" was produced on the basis of this model. |

Honda was established in 1948, and since then,it kept
introducing a lot of famous motor bikes. The model "T360" was the first
car that Honda produced. It was called "Sport Truck" rather than "
Light Truck." It was mounted with a 354cc, 4-carb HOHC engine, and could make
the maximum 30 hp. Two months later the Honda Sport 500 was marketed. |
|
 |
|
The model "Honda Sport 600" was marketed in
1964. It was the improved version of the model "S500" equipped with the
Japan-first DOHC engine, and was a highly efficient twin seat sport car. Its body
was similar to those of British light weight sport cars. The interior of this model
was full of the sport-car-type mood with the 4 sets of meters on an aluminium panel.
The words "11000 rpm" shown on the tachometer may give some ideas about the high
efficiency of this model. |

|
The prototype of Honda N360 first appeared at the 13th Tokyo
Motor Show in 1966, and gained great popularity as an innovative mini passenger car.
It had a two-box type body with a spacious saloon and was quite similar to the Mini Cooper
in style. It incorporated a front wheel FF-drive-power engine which was mounted in
front of the front wheels. |

|
The model "Honda Z" used to be very popular for
its special shape. With a radiator grille projected toward the front and also with a
sharply inclined wind-shield, it was more like a sport car. It was mounted with a 2
cylinder OHC engine, and could make a maximum speed of 115 kmh with 31 hp. |
|
 |
|
In 1960, the model "Mazda R360" was first
introduced, but due to its limited number of seats, it was less popular as compared with
other models. The model "Mazda Carol" was an improved version of the Mazda
R360. This was a perfect 4-seat car with an upright rear window called
cliff-cut. A 4 cylinder engine was mounted on the rear sideways, and could make the
maximum speed of 97kmh with 20h.p. |

The model "Subaru 360" with a nickname of
"Ladybug" first appeared before the public in May 1960 as one of the
reasonably-priced passenger cars. The aircraft-construction technology was fully
applied for the body of the model as shown on the oval-shape body. The model was
built as simple as possible, and became one of the best selling cars in Japan. |
